Chapter 11

After settling things with Elise, the encounter was actually pleasant in a way. I mean, if you could ignore the orgies going on around you enough to have a decent conversation.

She asked me about my time in the human world and I asked about how her business worked. My father stood to the side the entire time with a blank expression that no doubt meant he was not happy. Oh, well. Couldn't please everyone.

"I have to say," Elise led me through the room to the exit, "I had a more enjoyable time than I originally thought."

"Me too," I admitted, and it was actually true.

"Perhaps we could meet again some time?" Elise asked, her question showing a vulnerability in her that I hadn't seen yet before my father.

I smiled at her and nodded. "I'd like that but maybe..." I shot a look behind her trying not to grimace. "Somewhere less crowded."

Elise laughed, her head thrown back and her long blonde hair falling over her shoulders. "Agreed." She turned to my father and inclined her head, "Abraham."

"Elise." My father's tone was indecipherable. Whether or not it bothered Elise, she didn't show it.

I took the stairs back down to the main floor, not allowing my father's blatant stare at my back bother me. We were silent all the way to the limo until I stopped at the curb.

"I'm going to hang around for a while," I informed my father and Gerald.

My father paused at the door, holding it with his hand. "I would think you'd had your fill of this environment already."

I couldn't hold back my grimace this time. "While it isn't my preferred form of entertainment, I believe it is important to be amongst the supernaturals so that they will be more willing to come forward when the time comes."

He stared at me for a long moment and then shook his head. "You are something else, daughter."

I arched my brow. "I'm not sure if that is a compliment or an insult."

"Neither," he corrected. "You are doing things in a different way than I would have and I'm not sure if it is a good thing or a bad thing. However, it seems to be working so I will allow it." He slid into the limo without another word and Gerald closed the door behind him.

I scowled at the limo and watched as it drove away, leaving me on the curb alone. "I'll allow it," I mimicked his words with a sneer. Fucking right he would. I wasn't going to rule the way that he did faking friends while plotting their demise behind their backs. I'd never been very good at the political game the way he and my brothers were, and I wasn't going to pretend to be. I would play to my strengths and that was making friends.

Turning back to the club, I sucked in a breath. Now that business has concluded I could focus on what I'd really come here for.

Azeryth.

The bouncer opened the rope for me once more, gaining me just as many protests from those waiting in line.
